Expanded Lufthansa Business Class Reviews

This week we have more of everyone’s favorite German carrier with our expanded Lufthansa business class reviews. Expanding the reviews gave a more well-rounded picture of Lufthansa, validating their reputation as a great business class choice, but also confirming areas of concern.  There are many positive aspects of Lufthansa business class, and there are also several things that travelers should be aware of based on the reviews.

As a reminder, Premium Travel Insider aggregates reviews from around the web and scores them on a 1-3 scale. A 3 indicates that a given category exceeded reviewer expectations, a 2 indicates it met expectations, and a 1 failed to meet expectations. We evaluate a variety of categories, the most important of which we call the “Big 5” that are most important to a premium travel experience: seat, food, drink, service, and in flight entertainment. You can learn more about our methodology here.

Expanded Lufthansa Business Class Reviews Top Line

We now have 13 reviews from nine different sites. Lufthansa business class scored a 2.31/3 overall, and a “Big 5” rating of 2.30/3. Both ratings were increases from when we only had five reviews in our database. These ratings are well correlated, which is a sign of a consistent product. This means that you should check out our detailed reviews to make sure there is not a particular aspect of the experience which might score lower than the overall one. Our overall “level of detail” rating is 2.46/3, which means we have high confidence in these ratings due a high quantity of high-quality reviews.

What Changed the Most?

Category Current Rating Previous RatingChange
Service 2.62/32.20/3 +.42
Bedding2.00/31.67/3+.33
Drink 2.22/32.00/3 +.22
Seat1.771.60+.17

There were a number of changes, captured above, that were notable and worth reviewing. The best improvements were to service, bedding, and drink. Multiple reviews noted excellent and efficient service, driving a large increase in the score. Bedding was also more positively reviewed overall. Finally, the drink program was considered stronger, with some higher-end champagnes in some reviews and good cognac noted in others.

The seating rating is of concern. The main gripe with Lufthansa seats is that the majority of their aircraft are 2-2-2 or 2-2 configurations without direct aisle access at every seat. This problem is exacerbated by seats that are angled towards each other. This is great if you’re with someone you love (or at least like). Not so great with a stranger, unless you’re looking to make a new close friend. Adding more reviews confirmed general displeasure with these seats, and positive reviews of the seats were generally from reviews where there was no seatmate, or the reviewer was traveling with someone they knew. While seating increased +.17, it still remained in a subpar overall range.

What (Mostly) Didn’t Change?

Lufthansa food remains good. (Credit: Lufthansa)

Several categories remained the same. Food remained in the “great” range, at 2.42/3. Reviewers generally praised the quanitty if not quality of the food. The IFE score also remained constant in the great range, scoring 2.42/3. Reviewers praised the selection, but often the screens were underwhelming. The amenity kit score stayed a bit below average, at 1.77/3. Relatively basic contents kept this score low. The lavatory situation is similar, landing at a 1.71/3 rating. Lavatories are considered small and generally uninteresting. On some aircraft, a limited number of business class lavatories led to cleanliness issues, which reduced scores.

Is Lufthansa Business Class Worth Flying?

Based on our expanded Lufthansa business class reviews, we can definitively state that Lufthansa is a good product.  The main concern when flying Lufthansa is the seating situation if you are not flying with another person you know—in which case you might be best served picking the “middle” of the 2-2-2 configuration to ensure both parties have direct aisle access.  Ultimately the overall rating of 2.31/3 and “Big 5” score of 2.30/3 mean you are in for a good experience.
