This week we have expanded Hong Kong Airlines business class reviews. Expanding the reviews gave an improved perspective on the quality of Hong Kong Airlines. One very important caveat to Hong Kong Airlines is that most of the reviews on the internet are based around a “mistake” fare for $600. As a result, most reviewers had a positive impression based on the incredible price, compared to the actual quality of the “Big 5” characteristics. Hong Kong Airlines is a good airline — but pay attention to the details for the full picture.
As a reminder, Premium Travel Insider aggregates reviews from around the web and scores them on a 1-3 scale. A 3 indicates that a given category exceeded reviewer expectations, a 2 indicates it met expectations, and a 1 failed to meet expectations. We evaluate a variety of categories, the most important of which we call the “Big 5” that are most important to a premium travel experience: seat, food, drink, service, and in flight entertainment. Hong Kong Airlines Top Line
We now have 10 reviews from 10 different sites. Hong Kong Airlines business class scored a 2.40/3 overall, and a “Big 5” rating of 2.06/3. This is a stark difference between the “overall” and “Big 5.” Our analysis shows this is because bloggers and reviewers were very forgiving of flaws based on an extremely cheap business class fare. Many of the overall “Big 5” characteristics were quite average. Our overall “level of detail” rating increased to 2.30/3, which means we have high confidence in these ratings due a high quantity of quality reviews.
What Changed the Most?
The expanded Hong Kong Airlines business class reviews reveal sharp drops in several categories. The good news is that everything remain in the acceptable range. The bad news is, well, it’s an acceptable airline.
Food dropped to 2.20/3 from 2.60/3. Service saw a similar drop to 2.40/3 from 2.80/3. Bedding also dropped substantially to 2.14/3 from 2.50/3. Smaller drops were observed with the IFE, which dropped to 1.78/3 from 2.00/3, and the drink program, which dropped to 1.80/3 from 2.00/3. Driven by the great fares most reviewers had, the drop of the “overall” rating was less — down to 2.40/3 from 2.50/3.
The news wasn’t all bad. The seat increased to 2.10/3 from 2.00/3, and the amenity kit increased to 2.13/3 from 2.00/3.
What (Mostly) Didn’t Change?
A few categories remained roughly the same. These included the lavatories, which stayed at an acceptable 2.00/3, as well as the WiFi, which remained at a poor 1.20/3 from 1.25/3. These are collectively negligible.
Is Hong Kong Airlines Business Class Worth Flying?
Based on our expanded Hong Kong Airlines business class reviews, we believe that Hong Kong Airlines is an acceptable product. It’s generally a solid product, with the roughest issues being the IFE, drink program, and WiFi. If you can secure an advantageous fare, it’s an airline worth flying. If you’re looking for something fancier to or from Hong Kong, you might consider Cathay Pacific. Ultimately the overall rating of 2.40/3 and “Big 5” rating of 2.06/3 reveal an airline that has some contradictions, so flyers should research before booking.
